It refuses before it writes
Semantic search always returns neighbours. Ask a knowledge base about something it has no coverage of and it will still hand back ten pages — its closest material, whatever that happens to be. A model given those pages writes a coherent, well-structured, perfectly cited article about a different subject, and every citation resolves, because every citation really does point at a page that really was retrieved.
So the check runs before the model does. Every retrieved page has to actually name your subject or it is dropped. If nothing survives, there is no article here — and you are not charged for one.
A citation guard cannot see relevance.
Which is why the guard is not the only thing here.
Checked before the model runs. Pages that do not name your subject never reach the prompt.
Any citation to a page that was not retrieved is deleted from the prose. An invented source cannot reach a reader, even as a broken marker.
The finished piece has to lean on a real spread of what survived. A fluent article grounded in two pages out of twenty is thin, and thin is never billed.

What stops it writing a confident article about the wrong thing?
A topic anchor that runs before the model. Semantic search always returns neighbours — ask a brain about a subject it has no coverage of and it still hands back its nearest pages. Article Studio drops every retrieved page that does not actually name your subject, and if nothing survives it refuses and refunds. Checking that citations resolve is not enough: a citation guard cannot see relevance.
So a cited article can still be wrong?
A badly built one can, and that is the whole point of the three guards here. Relevance is checked before the model runs; any citation to a page that was not retrieved is deleted from the prose; and the finished piece has to lean on a reasonable spread of your sources rather than one or two. A draft that fails the third check reads perfectly and is still grounded in a sliver of your material, so it is treated as thin and not billed.
What is in gaps?
What your sources do not cover. Some of it is computed — subject words no surviving page ever named — and the rest is what the writer wanted to say and could not support. It is the deliverable, not an apology: naming a hole is more useful than filling it with something plausible.
What does it cost?
15 Ounie credits for a full article, 3 for an outline on its own, 2 to regenerate one section. A credit is one cent, drawn from the same Ounie wallet every app shares. Reading, exporting and sharing are free forever. There is no subscription.
Do I get charged if it refuses?
No. A refusal is either free before anything is reserved — a subject with no anchorable words, or the engine being unavailable — or a full pool-exact refund after the reserve. On the keyless x402 rail there is no refund possible, so the same checks run before the payment settles instead.
Can an agent use this without an Ounie account?
Yes. POST /api/x402/article with your own source_text and pay per call in USDC on Base. Same writer, same guards, same output shape — the brain is only ever the source of the text. Grounding in a private Ounie brain needs an account, because that is somebody's private knowledge.
Is my brain content stored here?
No. Article Studio keeps the words the writer produced plus a pointer — brain id and page slug — to each source it cited. Regenerating a section re-reads your brain live rather than replaying a stored copy, so a section written today reflects what your brain says today.
What are the internal links, exactly?
Suggested anchor text plus the brain page behind it. We do not know the URLs on your site and will not invent them, so it is a mapping job you finish in a minute — deliberately honest about being a suggestion rather than a link.
